Having been offered a Hopkins & Allen hammer gun for what seems like a reasonable sum for its condition I have looked high and low for some info and am not finding anything to help. Where did these stand in the order of things in there day? We talking closer to Crescent quality or closer to the standards of the time, Ithaca, L.C. , etc. What would be considered a fair price for a 12ga standard grade hammer gun in above average to very good condition? Thanks in advance.

I would say they're comparable to Stevens in quality. I don't see a lot of them, but I bought a 20 bore hammer gun by H&A, awhile back for $350. But 20 bore american hammer guns are a little scarce.. I'll let someone that knows how to type, do the history for you.. MDC

They were best known for their low cost pistols. They made large numbers of sxs guns. Many were made under brand names, Seminole, King Nitro, Merwin, etc.

I believe these dates are correct:
C. W. Hopkins and C. H. Allen 1868 - 1897
Hopkins & Allen Arms Co. 1898 - 1901 (major fire)
Forehand Arms Company 1901 - 1917
Marlin buys their assets - 1921
