I have just been given a BSA Number 2 bolt action target rifle in 22LR, of around 1912. Excellent condition inside and out. Do these have any collector value? It is petite and exquisite. The bolt has a locking lug very much like a Savage Model 25

If it's the rifle I'm thinking of,here's a link with some good information. not sure of the value sorry but I'm certain it'll be more than the 2-3 they cost new back then. looked them up recently after seeing one in a local gunshop.

Mike, if you can give me the serial number and any letter or letters that proceed it I will look it up in my copy of John Knibbs' book, 'The Golden Century' which list serial number dates for the various BSA guns. The little BSA .22's are usually very acurate if the bore is o.k. Sadly most of the early ones lack the ability to fit scope sights so this is a good time to hone your skills with iron sights. Best thing is to go out and shoot it with various brands to see what it does best with and shoot it and enjoy it. Lagopus.....

Lagopus, s/n is 26940, looks like 1994-07,and Rc533202 in tiny letters on the barrel, on bolt, patent 14373/07
The bore is perfect. A pair of flip-up peep sights, 50 yards and 100 yards. El Garro's link shows it to possibly be a Model 2, but there is no rear sight, the dovetail has a blank in it.
I sure would like to get an original elevation only rear sight as pictured.
Thanks El Garro for the link!
I was shooting it this morning with Remington target ammunition, plinking, shows promise, I'll try her off the bench when I get a chance.
No scope on this little beauty, it will be my grouse gun, just waiting for a few more leaves to fall....

Mike,

To the best of my knowledge, there is at best light interest in them by collectors. A lot of rim fire folks are familiar with them. Most that show up here were "club guns" and show heavy signs of abuse. Sounds like your barrel has not been shot out. You are fortunate. While not an Anschutz, they are known for their accuracy.

Can't find much on the serial number but no doubt John Knibbs will have the answer if contact him. According to his book the Model 2 started in 1908. tere was the standard model, a cadet or scout model with a longer forend. it was also available in .297/230 Morris centrefire. It looks like the rear sight you will need is the Number 8 model aperture sight or model 8A which had adjustable apertures. There are five variations of the Model 8 sight. The last serial number listed is 31720 sold in 1922. I'll keep looking about the Patent number but not come up with anything yet. Lagopus.....

Lagopus, the sight I need is the rear sight which taps into the dovetail halfway down the barrel. It raises and lowers for elevation, but you have to tap it for windage. It is not the #8 peep rear sight, but I would like one of those too, or an 8A. Thank you for your trouble,
Mike
