I have an opportunity to buy this gun for $1400. 29 5/8" bbls, BLNE, splinter, pg stk w/ round knob, sling swivs, cocking indics (tiny pop-up buttons on either side of the tang safety), wt~6lbs, steel butt plate, Greener crossbolt, Mod & full chokes.

Was not able to determine chamber lengths (no gauges) but I'm guessing they're <2.75" because of the apparent age: dah=3.25".

The gun is NOT in great shape: lever to left of ctr, very small chip in stk at butt plate, loose forearm.

But it is an attractive little gun with sculpted rcvr, (don't remember whether it's scalloped), well-balanced, swings well.

I know that Immanuel Meffert guns have a fairly good reputation as to quality but, other than that general observation, don't really know much about this maker. And, frankly, I was surprised at what I considered fairly high asking price for a shotgun in this condition.

If I bought the gun, I would want to recondition it: tighten the action/replace the hinge pin, re-blue the bbls, tighten the forearm and probably replace the stock (not crazy about it with that much drop) and refinish it and the forearm.

My question are these:

1) Considering the maker, gauge, the condition of the gun and the fact that it's a BLNE, is this anything close to reasonable asking price?

2) Once reconditioned and assuming that the work was of suitable quality, would the gun's monetary value approximate the purchase price PLUS the cost of reconditioning?

As always, any help will be very much appreciated.

Granby

The gun you describe is not worth half the asking price. I sold a real nice 12 bore Meffert for $800 about a year ago.. You can spend big bucks in restocking and restoration and yo still have an $800 to $1000 gun.. Sounds like a real money pit.. MDC

I fully agree with M D Christian.
Considering that 16 gauge German guns are common, this smaller gauge is not in the equation.
Meffert was a fine maker and is held in good repute, but so are many of the German makers. $1400 will buy most German "field grade" SxSs in very fine condition.

Granby,

Restocking is expensive. It should cost $2000.00 to $3000.00. Putting the gun on face and bolt should run about $300.00, if you use the "dovetailing the hook" method. Replacing the hinge pin is very expensive and normally not required. Reblacking the barrels should be about $300.00. I'd say that you're looking at a large bill, and I do not think that the gun is worth it.

Good advice here. If I'm understanding correctly the barrels are "off face"; for a crossbolted gun to achieve that condition it must have been pretty well thrashed. You will find a better one!

Thanks very much, guys. It was hard for me to imagine that a low end field gun from any German maker costing that much for a gun in this condition. I liked the appearance and feel of the gun enough to ask the questions but I had serious doubts. So I very much appreciate you guys taking the time and effort to help me out here.

Best,

Granby
