A friend of mine was over for dinner last night, and we got on the subject of diffrent guns used in sporting clays.
I shoot a lot of skeet and clays and dont rember seeing any Merkles on the range, once there was a 1980 gun,but I just dont see them .Is there a reason? They look like well made guns, that would hold up.

hampton, I see them from time to time, mostly trap shooters with Merkel O/U's. A friend I shoot with from time to time at a local club shoots a 147EL. They are quality guns, but their asthetics are not pleasing to some.

Merkels are certainly well made guns and could be used for sporting clays. I believe a large part of the reason they are not commonly seen is that most Merkels are made as field guns. Special features can be ordered, of course, but there are few off the shelf Merkels with the features many sporting clays shooters look for, such as ported barrels, extended forcing cones, etc. Other makers tend to specialize in sporting clays guns, whereas Merkel specializes in field guns.

Problem,as stated already,is when you see a dedicated 203et trap model,its an 8k gun.
They have no plain grade target models.
147el sxs does come in a "sporting" model 20ga.with 30" barrels, but the features end there, still has fixed chokes.

yobyllib, the friend that a I shoot sporting clays with has fixed choke IC/M in his 147EL, and he does very well with it.

Merkel will recommend sending the gun to Brileys for mobile choke installation if you want them.
