I had posted the pics of the action of this gun earlier. Here are additional pics of the gun.

I am wondering why Pape chose to put a shield on top of the grip instead of normal oval on ther under side of the stock. Is it normal for Pape guns.

Has it anything to do with it being a heavy live pigeon/water fowling gun?

Thanks

It is very common on Pape guns, just a stylistic variation which he preferred, much like the fancy border chequer.

House style .In days gone by it was not uncommon to have an oval or shield on the top of the hand as it was to have an oval on the comb usualy close to the heel .

Thanks for the info.

I always thought that the oval is on the underside of the stock as it is visible when there are a number of guns in the rack and the owner can easily pick out his gun.

I think it might be a carryover from the days of muzzle loading shotguns when the shield was on top. When they started having levers on top they were moved to the bottom.

Seems like a few American I have seen also have a forend wedge when you seen the shield on top.
