Hello - I have an odd question. I'm thinking of getting a nice octagonal barrel that is a take-off from what I'm pretty sure is a 1888 Mauser (the barrel has the typical CG Haenel and Bohler Stahl markings.) The person selling it says it "fits a Small Ring 98 action". Will the 1888 barrel actually fit a small ring action? Will it fit anything other than an 1888 action?

Thanks very much for any help.

M88 - Threads 12V, TPI - Dia .986 - Lenght of threads .720
M98SR - Threads 12V, TPI - Dia .980 - Lenght of threads .625
So I believe it could be made to work. The SR specs are for a 33/40. The only problem is the barrel "shoulder" on the SR is .980 and on the 88 it's .900. FWIW I hope that helps you. John Can.

John's specs are correct, but actual barrels can vary by a few "thousanths" and still fit.The .900 shoulder cited by John is correct for the military 88 with the tube.Since this is an octagonal barrel,it is civilian and would likely have a useable shoulder. The Haenel Mann. have similar threads and this barrel may have come from one of them. With care, this barrel can be used on several different actions. The small thread 98s and Swedes come to mind.
