I was just over at a friends place and he was showing me a gun he just bought, more as a curiosity than anything. It's a bolt action 12g. Now I've seen BA shotguns before, but this one is a typical mauser action with a 1 round magazine. It has a typical military style stock and apart from the rather large barrel diameter, looks just like your run of the mill military mauser. How common are these things?

He has no intention of shooting it but I have to ask, a mauser action being what it is, why would one in 12g be unsafe?

As I recall in order for the 12ga shell to feed through the action & fit the bolt face the front lugs were dispensed with, leaving all locking to the third "Safety" lug. It may be strong enough, but does not seem to very desirable to me. Would much prefer a good break action H&R or IJ myself.

Not all that unusual a gun. I've seen a handful of them over the years. I've heard that same thing concerning the removal of the locking lugs in the 12 ga. I've also been told that the 16 ga. versions retain the lugs and are good to go, but I don't know if it's true or not.

I just went & took an average of "1", a 1938 98K code 237 (year of my birth). The bolt body measured .695" dia & across the lugs .955" dia. I believe that Frank de Hass did an article on these in his book on bolt action rifles an actions.

Post WWI conversions of Muaser 98. Suspect more than a few were sold in the US. Seen several but never wanted to own or shoot any of them. Times were hard and money was in short supply so I suspect that anything that could be made, converted or sold was done so to make a buck. How many million 98's were surplus after WWI?

I've had a 16 for 50 years give or take, my dad bought it for me and it was my only shotgun for many years. If your Mauser 98 "bent" it's a great addition to the collection, actually this one started me down the Mauser appreciation road. Just puchased a 12 - I must pick it up soon, then I can tear and compare. My understanding was not that the bolt lugs were "altered in diameter" but the lug recesses were milled away to allow the fatter 12 shell enter the barrel, the smaller 16 retained some of the recess so the front lugs could still get a grip. I could be wrong but doesn't a 98 Mauser in essence have 4 lugs? doesn't one long lug of "sorts" hide behind the extractor? I never felt that safety was a big issue but would be interested in seeing some photos of one that has come apart. --- John Can.
