Looks like a rather well executed stock. Better than just amateur work. The metal seems to be in the white so maybe it's a work in progress? Nice rifle. I do like a good Springfield.

I would say it's a Griffin & Howe, like this one, minus the scope and mount and the barrel mounted sling swivel:

That's what I was thinking. Regardless, it wasn't a product of a backwoods Bubba shop.
The guy strikes me as a man of means too. Absent is the slack jawed look of so many nimrods in vintage photos, replaced by keen eyes, clean shaven cheeks, and most importantly, new suspenders. I'm betting he was a city-based professional man on a hunting trip out in the boonies. Ha ha, all in fun this reading into old pics what we want to see.

Hell, he just stepped out of a Michigan saw mill after the boss gave him new suspenders for Thanskgiving because his old one were about to give way. The Boss's son Mike was standing in the yard with his camera, handed him his new Niedner rifle, "Hold this" and snapped the photo of Jake, still covered with wood chips. No Smoking at the saw mill!
Best part of old pix is making up your own story, eh? Great pic!
