Hi all, I ran across this one: http://www.gunsinternational.com/detail.cfm?id=100249148Rather nice looking gun(except the recoil pad). I'm not buying, just wanted to see what you all thought. All the best Greg

Looks like it was crudely restocked at some point in it's life.

Five grand will buy a lot more gun than that in this market today. And that stock is under 14 inches with that pad, to boot.
Greg, I am always leery of an ad attempt to "beautify" a gun that is not going to fool or impress those knowledgeable about side by sides into believing it is more than they know it to be.
It tells me the seller is trying to hook an inexperienced buyer with all that spin. My hackles just go up some.

Beautiful engraving...disappointing wood, which is not uncommon for pre-war Brit guns...LOP a tad short....doubt it will fly off the shelf any time soon at that price for a boxlock.

Would be interesting to trace this gun through and find its original maker though, maybe another W & C Scott & Sons masterpiece with some other name on it. Didn't Thomas Bland & Sons or Cogswell & Harrison build guns for other people, also?

Just read the post concerning who actually made the action, it would seem that most of the english guns I've worked on had actions made by just a handfull of makers. I'm in the process of identifying the action on a W.Richards. Liverpool and Preston gun I own at the moment and all leads would seen to be pointing to Scott. I'm new on here but it's a great site.

Aren't those bolsters and barrel engraving a bit unusual for a British gun?
Such a long, long time to be gone, and a short time to be there.

Vickers was based in Crayford Kent,Outside of the city of London. In the era this gun was made Vickers were offering their "Imperial" a side lock ejector for 25 pounds;or without ejectors at 17 pounds. It is possible that Vickers had this gun made for their display at the British Empire exhibition of 1924. Almost certainley the gun was made by W&C Scott on their Reliance action.[W&C priced this in their wholesale catalogue at 26 pounds.]Vickers were armaments manufacturers and in this era were promoting the sale of shotgun and rifle barrel blanks using,Vickers steel. The engraving is in the style of the late H.Morris a very talented Birmingham engraver. In my opinion the Stock is a sub-par replacement, otherwise a very nice Gun. A Vickers S.L.E. cased was recently sold in th U.K.for $1250 approx.
