I thought this might be of interest. It is the 1935 Midland Gun Company catalogue

how things have changed here in the UK!!
I hope it doesnt infringe any copyright but I guess as it is 77 years old that is unlikely.
A friend lent it to me so I have photographed it and put it on photobucket
http://s1069.photobucket.com/albums/u466/oldfarmer2/ is the link. You should be able to press "ctrl" and "click" on the link or just copy and paste this link to see the whole catalogue. I love some of the names The Defiance The Pioneer The Sudden Death Gun and the Demon gun more expressive than a 725 or a 686?
So whats your new gun? Oh its the Sudden death!!! has a certain ring to it. Mauser broom handles at 5.10.0 whats that about $6 ??
It would appear that they have been loaded in reverse order the wonders of this modern age!!
Hope you enjoy.

I was fairly certain my Midland 20 bore hammergun was a later
vintage and their it is on page 4 "The Rabbit Gun" looks identical, the fine print says avaliable as a 20 and with straight stock,it is not however marked with a model name

Thanks much for the post Oldfarmer

I was surprised that they were still doing muzzle loaders in 1935 and you could get a "Lion, tiger or Bear Trap". Steel clay pigeons would be a challenge!!
Even back then recoil must have been recognised as a problem as you could get a "Pneumatic Recoil Heel Pad" - there isn't much that is new?

Having had the pleasure of talking to men who new the Midland in the 30's I was told that they ran a very big trading company ,goods from the colonies ,Africa and India ,hides tusks and all manner of other stuff imported in payment for goods sent. I was also told the percussion guns were made up until 1938 as were damascus barreled guns .
As to currency conversion I think that the dollar ran at 4 to the pound in those days . Our Half Crown [hats 2 shillings and 6 pence in old money] as often referred to as "half a dollar" .A Crown beign a largely out of fashion 5 shilling coin .[20 shilling to the pound ]

I have a fondness for Midland Gun Co. stuff as they made a wide range of guns from basic to best quality. I have a couple of 'Sudden Deaths', one 12 and one 16, a Dreadnought 20 in mint condition, a Demon 12 bore, a 'Knockabout' 16 bore and a best boxlock 12 with the 3" chamber option and single trigger. I did have a Rabbit 12 bore but parted with it when I should have kept it and always regret parting with a Demon 20 with damascus barrels. Such things happen when another gun comes up and the gun fund is a bit low. You will also find a host of their guns bearing other 'Makers' names. Lagopus.....
