I'm trying to figure out how adding something to the butt is going to give more drop.
Pretty rare that some needs 'more drop', usually less drop.

I have cut brass shim stock to shim a stock at the head. If you purchase .010 stock you can cut it nicely with a common shears your wife sews with. Just loosen the thru bolt add a couple of your hand made shims retighten the stock and measure the results. One 391 has shot 20,000 shells with brass shims at the junction of the stock and reciever.

That may not be a bad idea Bill, I think I'll try that. Do you just shim the top portion or 1/2 way down the reciever/stock junction?

If you go to an automotive supply house, they will sell you a sheet of "artificial gasket material". The stuff is like heavy paper and comes in several thicknesses. It can be cut with scissors or an x-acto knife. Trace & cut out the shape you want and then either laminate it or take a Dremel to grind down one side to angle the shim. If you want it fancy, you can paint it with clear nail polish. It takes me about 15 minutes to make a shim for a Beretta or Benelli auto.

Mike,
This won't give a quick fix but will help you determine a measurement.
Make a "rib" as long as the barrel out of wood, 1/4"X barrel lenght X 1/4. Cut a kerf across each end. Sand one side to match the barrel contour. Attach the rib, centered, to the barrel with stout rubber bands. Put the bands in the kerfs so you don't see them when you mount the gun. You can make several of different thickness to stack on this rib. Experiment until you have one, or a combination that looks "flat" down the barrel. Measure the height the rib extends above the reciever, this is a rough idea of the amount to remove from or move the top of the stock.I caution you, this is a rough measure. You will need to go slowly and mount/shoot the gun into a marked target to see your POI, adjust accordingly. From this point other factors will come into play, how the stock meets your face/ shoulder etc. Hope this helps.

Jim,

I think he's talking about tilting the recoil pad to adjust the barrel angle up/down.

Tilting the recoil pad does not change where the barrel is so long as your cheek is on the comb, where it should be. You've got to move the comb to change the drop, up OR down. The persistent myth that pitch has anything significant to do with whether the gun shoots high or low must be holdover from the days when shooters shot with their heads erect and did not cheek the comb as most of us do, now. That's why many old guns have excessive drop.......the combs were not really used then as they are now.

I was tOld....tilting the recoil pad would change how the gun recoils.
Jim you think this might effect point of impact if it was off enough ?

It's still a popular belief that a change in pitch will raise or lower the POI. If that were true, the rocker pads now becoming somewhat popular with the sporting crowd should make you shoot yourself in the foot! The most important(and only, IMO) function of pitch is to ensure maximum contact between the pad and your shoulder pocket, relative to your build and gun mountimg style. I think that means I support what you were tOld. Probably no, to the question. That's all JMO, of course.
