I was wondering how the level of the Italian Ferlib model 7 guns compare.

Really???? 5 pages and 1100 hits on boots and nothing on an actual nice side by side gun??? The board is scratchin' for traction.

Gettemans, the DGJ forum correspondent from Belgium, is familiar with this maker - hopefully he can pipe in.
Such a long, long time to be gone, and a short time to be there.

Well its not a Scott 700, Smith or Parker which is much beloved on here, along with a bunch of M21 haters....LOL!!
Ferlib is a great quality gun and not cheap but they are rather obscure here in the States as are Gastine Renette.

Hi Ham, yes all Ferlib guns are of excellent quality at least the guns that I have seen from the beginning 90 Th. I am not sure if Ferlib is still in business now. I have no idea if you can find them easely in the U.S. but here they where popular. If you want a quality Italian gun this is the one to buy. Marc.

Hi Chuck
I have a Ferlib, but its not a s/s its a O/U in 20g looks like a Superlight.Engraved by Piardi who is with Creative Arts I believe .The quality is excellent for the money, you could get a bit better I suspect with a Piotti King or A&S but not sure its worth the much higher jump in price. I have in the past emailed Ferlib and Ivano Tanfoglio was kind enough to write back and give info.
Hope that helps

Clif, the problem with Renette is that they were basically a marketer of guns made by others rather than a maker. Sort of on the lines of Abercrombie & Fitch in the States. I once owned a very nice Renette-marked Petrik, the not often seen French OU with the sliding breech hood that was later copied in the Remington 32/Krieghoff.

We should have Rocketman set up a value scale for the Italian guns as well. I mean where does Ferlib, which I always thought was a Belgium maker, fit in line with A&S or Piotti or the Filli Rizzini or Perazzi?

Ferlib went through two incarnations. At first, they were owned and almost entirely staffed by one man Libero Ferraglio (hence, FERLIB). He made guns by hand, but used the typical outworker system in Gardone. Quality ranged from plain but well-made boxlocks to very fancy sidelocks. He specialized in ofering superb engraving. He had a tiny, dark shop, spoke little or no English and made one very welcome on visits. The gun I had made has beautiful wood, fine engraving with inlays by Bregoli and handles like a rapier. After Libero died, the brand was taken over by Ivan Tanfoglio, whose interests span all types of guns. I have never played with one of them, so I can't comment on them, but I know he wanted to maintain the quality. I can recommend the Libero guns pretty much without reservation, keeping in mind the range of models and prices he would produce.
