Many years ago I took a woodworking course at the local SUNY. About the only thing I remembered was how to sharpen plane blades and chisels. I was taught the hollow ground method and it's always worked well for me. I got a Delta 23-710 sharpening center but only use the vertical wheel to put in the hollow. Once that's done I use a stone to get the edge. You can probably find a wheel to mount on an electric motor to grind hollows, mine's a white stone, fine grit, about 1.5"wide and 5"dia.
Just my experience, I know there are others here with much more practical experience than mine.
My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income. - Errol Flynn

Shave your head shiny smooth. Then cut your fingernails as short as possible. This will prevent you from tearing out whatever hair you may presently have or scarring the chrome dome once you have it shaved and shined.

..and once you get them sharp protect those sharps edges with all the care you can muster. I find leather covers work the best.I once slipped with a chisel and it hit my left middle finger and I was afraid to look as it was scarey sharp...3 stitches and a lot of blood later I learned about what sharp really means.

Yep...I was well into the final fitting on the head of a low wall stock, and was paring some high spots with a 3/8" fishtail...which I managed to put completely through my left index finger. Wrapped it up in a paper towel and had my beloved drive me to the ER. The good doctor looked it over, and told the nurse to "get some derma-bond and steri-strips"...I said "superglue and a band aid? I coulda done that at home..."
Almost as dumb as the time I...

No laughing now, well a chuckle would be OK ;-). Remember I'm just now trying to learn this, tools are very basic. I've been using soft pine, not a good choice and some wood from an old Krag stock. I'll get some better wood to practice with.

Michael, Go to "You Tube" and search for "Frank Klaus" or "making a dovetail" and see how easy the experts make it. Klaus doesn't even mark them out and just does it by eye.Of course, he's been doing it for a very long time and it shows.

The saw is pretty critical too. Probably more so than the chisel IMO. A sturdy , thin blade with little or no set to the teeth, configured as a rip saw not crosscut, is worth its weight in gold.
