Perrins Owners Club and Vintagers Meet
At South Worcester Shooting Ground
Saturday June 9th 2012

In June 2010 the first ever meeting of the Perrins Owners Club was held at South Worcester Shooting Ground. Over the past two years several more of these lovely old, Worcester made guns, have coming to light. We know there are more out there still, so if you have one, or know of one, please get in touch.

It is 25 years since Pauline and John Clements opened the ground so it was felt it was the ideal time to hold another meet.

At the last meet there was a great deal of interest from non Perrins owners in these pieces of working, living history. We will therefore be opening the day up to anyone with an interesting pre 1914 shotgun to bring it along and meet with like minded enthusiasts.
Anyone who doesnt have a vintage gun and just wants to come along will be made very welcome.
The day is free but for anyone who wants to fire their guns, as long as they are safe, there will be a 50 bird sporting layout available, at a nominal cost. This will be a rare opportunity to see so many of these wonderful historic pieces gathered together in one place.

I have already been in touch with David Baker, columnist and author, Guy Smith, columnist and author, Lew Potter, columnist, author and gunsmith,Tony Halward, who has a wealth of knowledge trading in English guns over several decades. Nick Chambers, now retired but one of the best barrel browners around and Graham Banks, who worked all his life with Chris Ashthorp; the inventor of barrel sleeving; who are all hoping to be along on the day.
I am sure they will all be happy to give you an opinion of your guns.

The day will start at 11.00, finishing around 4.00, and as before it will be very informal.

As this is the 25th year that South Worcester Shooting Ground has been open it would be good to see as many of the people who shot in the early years back at the ground for this special day. The ground has grown from its early beginnings with just 10 manual traps to one of the best equipped clay shoots in the area with over 30 automatic traps and several high towers.

Old Farmer, thanks. Good pictures. I am especially interested in the "False Hammer Gun". Do you know if it is using the Grey patent ? Here's another False Hammer Gun on that patent.

Not too sure!
Out of about 40 Perrins guns we have found I think there are 4 false hammer guns - so Henry must have been quite an enthusiast for the system.
I see yours is a false pin fire hammer - never seen one of those before - I think all the Perrins ones are mimicking the conventional centre fire.
These forums are great - as soon as you publish something there is someone else thousands of miles away with a comment or a new variation that you have never seen before.
What a great gun and excellent photos.

This is another 'Perrins' variation on the false hammer idea. These cocking leavers also act as indicators. The mechanism is cocked either by the lever under the trigger gaurd, which also opens the gun, or by usuing the leavers individualy. The hammers can also be made safe by using the leavers.

John, you are so right about the miracle of being able to share knowlege around the world. I have never seen the last variation you pictured. Fun gun. I am often in awe, I guess, of the French inventor, Pauly. Around a half century before the guns we have shown, circa 1812, he developed a centerfire cartridge gun in both rifle and shotgun. Very high quality guns. These guns, too, used a cocking lever for internal hammers to fire the centerfire, breechloaded, cartridge. Here're a couple of views of two different Pauly guns.

Fascinating!!
What are you doing on June 9th - fancy a trip over here?
Have a look at http://s763.photobucket.com/albums/xx278/Perrinsshotguns/?start=260
You may need the password 12boreshotgun to access the site. It has photos of the last meet 2 years ago - video clip of my punt gun being fired, trip earlier this year to the Royal armouries in Leeds and a few other bits and pieces.

John, oddly enough, I'll be close by, relatively speaking. Sweden on June 6 for a family reunion. First one in 140 years. Hope to find something interesting, doublegunwise, while there. Any hints on where to look ?

Love your pictures and the BIG gun. Daryl

Sorry - never been to Sweden - but I think they are pretty keen on their shooting.
Watch out for the mozzies at that time of the year - I hear they can grow as big as pigeons!!

John, I think I can handle them. I lived in Alaska for 30 years, where the mosquito was the "State Bird".

If I'm between trips to Texas and Africa, as I believe I will be, I'll drop in and see if I can bring my Perrins 20-bore hammer gun. I don't know how to put photos on here but I have some good ones of it on my site. Feel free to use them if you wish. Looks like it will be a nice event - weather permitting.
