I have an H&H hammerless double rifle that has the original stock. It came from an Indian prince's armory and needs some attention to the checkering and some wood repair. The checkering is buggered up and it needs to have a small piece of wood inletted into the stock to bring the stock up to the proper level at the top of the right lock. The original wood has good figure and overall in good shape. Who do you recommend to do the repair work? The bores are shiney and I want to save the original stock if possible.

Check with Craig Libhart in Pa. one of the top stock makers in the country including repairs and blending. Nice fellow to deal with. G.

Why not send it back to Holland's office in NY? That way the repair and refurbishment has a pedigree. The Indian prince would have done so.

I'd choose Craig over H&H, NY any day.
If for no other reason, you will be dealing with the guy doing the work.

I'd say that advice ought to be predicated upon how many Hollands Craig has done in the past. If not H&H (who'd probably send the wood to UK), I'd suggest the gun be sent to Trevallion. A Purdey stocker can do it justice.

If you send it to H&H in N.Y., they will be sending it to Mr. Hodgins in Logan Utah. And Paul will be doing the work. Yes, I know that for a fact. Just cut out the middle man and send it to Paul.

And how many Lefevers has Hollands done in the past??? What has whether he has worked on a H&H got to do with the price of beans? Craig is a very very good stockmaker and can do the work, Whether he has the time or inclination is another. Quite honestly if a potential client asked me that question I would suggest that he not let the door hit him in the a$$ on the way out!

I have no idea why American stockmakers seem to be considered 2nd tier. Maybe it's because our checkering is inferior to the English. tired

Yeah, check out the checkering on a middle grade Lefever as opposed to a 60,000 dollar English best.

I asked H&H about doing some work on my H&H Dominion grade. They also referred me to Paul for stock work and Ken Eversull to tighten the pin. Eversull did a great job but it wasn't cheap. I went to someone else for a new fore end. I think the price from Paul was around $3K.
