I'll agree with the RBL. Hunted with a friend's 28" and it was every bit as good a 28 gauge sxs I had that was 10 times the cost. Wish the RBL had been on the market before I purchased my gun!-Dick

At Cabela's I saw a Fausti DEA sidelock for around $2,400.00 that was real nice. Although the model is called an SL, it's not a sidelock. Sideplated boxlock. If you're looking at a 28ga to save carry weight in the field, then the CZ comes out on top among the least expensive guns. The problem with most inexpensive 28's is that they're built on 20ga frames and end up weighing more than the same gun in 20ga.

I have one of the little AyA boxlocks. I forget the exact weight but it is just over 5 pounds and actually lighter than the same gun in .410 that I have due to the .410's thicker barrels. The AyA is built on a true 28 bore action and well worth a look. Lagopus.....

Would like to keep it under 4k . AyA boxlock 4/53 28ga with 28" barrels, double triggers, english stock. all right around 3 grand. (anywhere on the net) it's not going to get much better.

Give Mark DeHaan a look, too. http://www.dhshotguns.com/IIRC, the Huglu 28s are built on a frame scaled to 28ga.
fiery, dependable, occasionally transcendent

For that kind of money, I'd go with an AYA #4. Here's a gorgeous #4 Deluxe... this is the one I'd go for! Super nice wood, drop points, scalloped action, checkered butt, rounded grip, 28" bbls, and nice English-style scroll. It's priced a little over $4K but you can probably talk them down a bit. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=250332633Adam

Let's not forget an AYA 4/53 28 gauge well within target price too. Good point.

www.gunsinternational.com presently lists several #2 sidelocks 28 gauge under 4K and at least one 4/53 28 gauge under $2500.00.

AYA #2, Parker Repro, RBL, in that order and none of them at normal retail. There are distress sales on all three of them out there if you look.
