What bore diameter should I expect with an early 1908 A grade 12ga. Fox? How did they leave the factory? Was there a range or standard at .729"? Regarding barrel weights...Fox book has a chart for its barrel sizes[1,2,3,4] within gauge. Weighing a particular 12ga. 30" barrel it comes to 3# 10.2oz. on a digital scale. That weight is close to dead on for a #3 wt. barrel in the book. The book list weights are for the pre-struck barrel weight. What do you do when the barrel doesn't have a wt. stamp on it. This particular gun is before the weight system was published. Total weight on this gun is 7 # 4.8oz. Any thoughts? Just curious on the wt. question. Thanks for your reply, Randy

RMC,
I've found my Fox 12 bores to all be very close to .729 and think any variance is probably due to the quality of my gauge. If barrel weight stamps not visible, all you can do is interpolate from the chart in Mac's book what the pre struck weight would have been and 'back in into' the number... 4,3,2,1...

jmc, Thanks for the reply. The bores on my gun are .731" both barrels, entire length. Can someone hone .002" on a barrel? Seems like such a small amount, .001" on each side. On the barrel wt. #, the finished barrel wt is right on the #3 wt. for a 30" barrel. Does backing in mean they are probably #2 wt. barrels? Randy

Randy,
I'm going to have to go to my notes on barrel measurements for my Fox 12 bores and see which still have the weight stamps. I know for sure I have at least barrels with 1, 3, & 4 stamps. If Mac's charts were pre-struck weights, you may ascertain that your 30" bbls were '2-weight' bbls but I'm really not sure how much material would actually be removed or how close the unstruck weights are w/out getting the book out.

The bore measurements for my 12 bore Fox A-grade (#4 wt barrels, 28" long, retarded amounts of choke in each tube) are .727 both barrels.

".731" both barrels, entire length" Is there no choke?

Tudurgs, Didn't hear your name mentioned as a winner of the AuSable race last weekend. Is that race nuts or what? Can't imagine racing all night long. Regarding the Fox: Chokes are .035" and .042". Bore measurement was just that. .731" from end of forcing cones to start of chokes. Randy

Of what value to the owner is the barrel weight stamp?
That weight stamp was most likely intended for the Fox worker who went to fetch a set of barrels to make up a gun in a specified weight range. Seems if it were important for the owner to know, the Fox company would have made it a point to restamp the many (majority?) barrels that have no numbers.
You have the gun, you know the weight and the handling characteristics. Why work backward in an effort to speculate on which bin the barrels came out of? How is that information helpful?

Mike, when you say no numbers, do you mean they've worn off (which is what I've always assumed when I couldn't read them on a Fox--often the case) or that they weren't there to start with? I thought they were all supposed to be numbered at the factory.

Larry, struck off to bring a tube down to weight or shape. My old #8833 is .732 until 4" before muzzles, then .730 for about an inch and then a little over 3" of choke to .037 of choke. Total choke is .039. I don't think it was honed because nothing else was ever done to it except breaking the stock at the grip.
