Hi There I bought a case of 16g 1oz target shells to run through my 16g. They are 2 and 3/4 length. Problem is, my very well made but old shotty does not give any indication of chamber size. There are no stampings on the flats or the receiver. I dont have gear for measuring chambers, how else can I work it out? I suspect the gun is late 1800's vintage.

Unless the chambers have been lengthened (which would not help solve your dilemma), they're almost certainly 65mm/ 2 1/2" on a gun of that vintage. The problem with most 2 3/4" factory loads in short-chambered guns is not so much the length of the case, but rather the fact that they're loaded to higher pressure standards than the shells for which older, short-chambered guns were proofed. I'd proceed with extreme caution.

Yeah, I half suspected that would be the case. I might get a gunsmith to take a look at the chamber length.... Cheers.

Take an old credit card and cut a strip the exact width of the chamber. Insert this strip until it won't go any further. Mark the remaining portion of the strip. Measure the part that went into the chamber up to the mark and that will give you the chamber length.

If it doesn't say anything then 10 to 1 it has 2 1/2" chambers and intended for black powder. Lagopus.....

This works also http://www.lcsmith.org/faq/chamlgth.html

I'd be much more concerned about wall thickness.

A nice old gun. The price difference in 2.5 and 2.75 isn't all that great.

Those old guns had different tube contours as the modern ones very often; they were more slender and diameter became smaller very short after the chamber cone.
Apart from the fact, this gun is proofed for B-P loads, there is a real risk that the thickness of the barrels will be very thin when the gun has been altered to the 2 3/4 chambering.
It is a very nice gun you have there, do not take any risk with it!
