I noticed an earlier thread regarding d/rifles and have a couple of questions.

What is a good starting point for a d/rifle? I wouldn't be hunting anything larger than black bear and all my hunting would be in North America.

What is a decent quality rifle but not overly expensive (if there is such a thing)?

I'd have to say the starting point is a large pile O cash smile
if you want a nice older gun.
There are new ones, but they do not appeal to me as the old vintage beauties do.
Chapius (sp?) make new ones

I would recommend staying away from the Sabatti, there seems to be many owners that have had problems. Chapuis is probably the best value in a SXS new gun. Can you live with a O/U rifle? Also lots of good used guns.

Have a look at this Winchester O/U double rifle in .270 Win.

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Gun-Library/Winchester-Rifles|/pc/103792680/c/103589280/Winchester-Grand-European-XTR-270-Win270-Win/1124166.uts?destination=

I don't think the link copied right. Go the Cabela's Gun Library, Click on Winchester Rifles, the click of Rogers, MN. It in their listing.

Thre's been a lot of chatter about the Sabatti DR issue for some time and it sounds very sorry indeed. Most people welcomed the addition of an "affordable" DR and initially the Sabattis seemed to be a good deal. Then it became evident that a number of owners claimed the regulation was being done by altering the crown or the last few mm of muzzle (so-called "regulation by Dremel") Fortunately for the buyers, Cabellas is giving refunds.

I investigated DRs throughly and based on near-universal recommendation by owners and experienced DR shooters (I am not one of the latter) I bought a Chapuis 9.3x74R from Dale Nygaard. I am too old to go after Cape Buffalo in Africa but may well try for some bigger game here in N Amer. This rifle/caliber is a favorite of boar-hunters in Europe.

The Chapuis is a beautiful and well-made rifle and I got myself a reloading setup and am having a great time with it.

The Chapuis fits me perfectly (lucky) and comes up just like a SxS shotgun (but heavier)

Have you considered the CSMC SxS 20 bore with fully rifled barrels?

Maybe you could pick up some information on the double rifle forum on this site. The Kebco poster on this thread once showed me a lightweight side by side 9.3X74 that I fell in love with. You might PM him.

Interesting gun. But why does this qualify as a "shotgun" in a "shotgun only" state? Why isn't it a rifle?
