I have a Greener project. It is a damascus gun from the 1890s. I plan to have the barrels refinished, take care of some minor lock-up problems and re-stock with a nice piece of English Walnut. Now to the safety question. All the Greeners with side safeties I've ever seen had the safety aligned with the axis of the bore. This gun's safety is cocked to the right several degrees. I have not looked inside yet to see, but is there a possibility that I could have the safety straightened up when the gun is restocked? I am curious if there is a mechanical reason that it can't be done.

As long as the safety works properly I see no problem in straightening it up. Getting the PLACEMENT of the side safety just right is tough. Be prepared to have to make minor tweaks in the safety and/or the trigger blades. Once you see how it works you'll see the safety can be tilted a few degrees either way and still function. Good luck and I'd love to see photos of your Greener.

The transverse bar that rotates to engage the trigger blades would have to be re fitted, and there might not be enough metal left to make the gun "safe" The exact placement of the safety bar is probably one of the toughest parts of restocking any gun with a Greener type safety. Using a semi-inlet stock using the original as a pattern makes the job much easier.

Best of luck,

Mal

Just a hint, If the safety is too high, you can add height to the trigger blades by soldering on some metal. No big deal. If too low, file the trigger blades for clearance. I'm talking minor adjustments, you have to get it pretty close. Like most gun work, take your time and make it right. I hope you've done this type of work before.

David:
Why not save yourself untold grief and simply splice some "nice wood" onto the existing stock head? But if it were me, I'd simply stick with the stock you have and contact Mark Larson if you lust for more "figure."

There's some cracking along the back of the action and some oil soaking. It just makes good sense to restock. That way it will be in good shape for the next 120 years.

The Greener side safe is set at angle so it is flush with the panel . Make a template from the old stock and mark the centers of the pilot hole you will need to drill carefuly ,if you the work from this you shouild have no trouble. You need to get the angels of the panels correct and closed to finished size before you start any inletting.
