Geno,

Thanks for sharing. You should take a look at some of the goose hunting video that takes place in the US and note some subtle differences in techniques... and possibly try them out to see if you find them more challenging and enjoyable. For example, shoot the geese as they setting into your decoys (still flying). It's fine to let a couple land as it will help commit other geese to your rig, but our sport is to only shoot ducks and geese that are flying. Drilling them on the ground is considered poor form over here and not much of a challenge but I udnerstand that there are different customs around the world. I'm guessing you are using lead shot (as opposed to non-toxics such as steel or alloy matrix)so, killing them cleanly should not be a worry as long as you shoot them at a reasonably close range.

Probably you don't know that there are 2 kinds of feather hunters, one shoot birds in fly only and second only on the ground or on the water. Second hunters are proud of their abilities to land bird on the ground and its not easy sometimes. Personally I used both tactics, but prefer to shoot flying as well.
Re. American videos - I saw a lot of times on professional call makers videos, like some professionals shoot ducks right on the water.
And last, there was old Russian tradition to shoot the whole flock right on the ground or water from big bore guns.

Geno, what are you allowed to hunt in Russia? Is it legal for the average person to own a gun? Are you only allowed to own a certain type and amount of guns?

Geno,

That is interesting and, I did not know about the other method as sport so I've learned something new. Geese certainly smarten up as the season progresses along migration routes so getting them on the ground in the decoys becomes inherently tougher the more they have been called and shot at. I did not mean to imply that American duck/goose hunting videos set the standard for how waterfowl hunting should be conducted. By no means do I believe that. I'd hate to see the black hoodies (sweatshirts) with call maker logos on any more waterfowl 'hunters' than we already have over here in North America. It would seem that the method of shooting them on the ground - even with lead - is less efficient as far as number of shots as I counted 4 shots to take two geese. This is likely due to pellets not penetrating vitals through folded wings agaist the body. More shooting also translates to noise polution and an education for the geese. Any how, it looks like you've got some good goose hunting and I wish you happy hunting. What kind of gun and loads do you use for geese?

Regards,
jmc

Average person could own 5 long shotguns and 5 rifled guns. Collectors could own any number of guns and rifles, DR etc. But they have to get collector licence, what its not easy. To own short firearms, we have to form guard buro and a lot of modern Russian businessmen do that.
