That tree is no good there are nails or screws in just from the feeder and many over the 90 years. It will bleed into the tree and streak it. Any tree 50 ft near a house or road is not a good canidate to mill.

The tree is probably fine. I just had one sawn with a Woodmizer that was right in front of a house. The tree people that took it down told me there was iron in it but we avoided it and what little streaking was there did not really affect the wood at all. Every tree is unique and with a bandsaw mill you can avoid any major expense if you happen to "total" a blade as they only run about $27 for the Woodmizer mills.If I lived near this tree I would get it in a heartbeat.The real expense is in having it safely taken down.

In the past, I have been involved in felling trees to get the lumber and I have come to one conclusion! If you want to get wood for a gun stock, buy it from a gun stock dealer!!!!!

The last big walnut we cut from a yard was over 4 feet in diameter and it fought us all the way. At the mill we found a 5/8 eye bolt that the band saw cut right through. Needed a new blade right after that cut but the old one was resharpenable. Anyway real nice wood, very fancy. The limbs were up to 2 feet in diameter. We cut them into boards (be carefull it takes forever to stablize) Bottom line lots of great wood, but there are many problems you encounter.

I would agree the best way to get a gunstock blank is to buy it from a dealer...unless you are hooked on watching a log yield it's mysteries as you saw it up. I just wish I was 30 years younger and able to really get into chasing walnut logs.
