Hello Michael,

Somehow I don't think Neidner ever saw that rifle. I'm also sure that if Neidner ever got that ham fisted applying letter stamps he would have given up metalwork of any type. A poor attempt to increase the value of the rifle? Perhaps.

The number applied beneath the action serial number could possibly be an issue or armoury/arsenal rack and position number. It certainly looks like it was applied by a different and more experienced hand.

Harry

Vienna nitro proofs under SN the 266th gun proofed in 1952. The "barrel address" is BS although spelled correctly.

All the best, Mal

Looks like a British Nitro Proof mark along with the old fractional gauge number system used by the Brits for determining barrel diameter.

I do not know so if this is wrong please correct me...the shape of the numbers in the serial number, the 5 & 6 especially, look rather fancy for normal gun serial numbers. And is there any significance to the "1968" in the SN?

Until about 280000 Springfield used fancier numbers with serifs on the serial #, afterwards numbers were sans serif. That is why I commented on the serial #, also if you look closly, the serial # is not centered on the rest of the receiver marking.

Please correct me as well, but if they added extra numbers and proof marks wouldn't they have to anneal the receiver before doing so?
