Hi all, trying to get the low down on this Fox. As I know next to nothing about American Classics, I was wondering if you can help me out. From what I understand this gun has replacement bbls made by Savage. On checking with the Fox Collectors, there is no card on this gun, thus no records. The gun is a restock of course. Here is a link to the gun:

Here are some other pics:

I know that the SN dates the gun (sans bbls) to the Philly era, but is or is this not an original DE Grade gun?

Your input please!

Thanks as always!

Greg

IMHO, this is a late Phila. D grade gun perhaps started there and finished and sold in Utica after the sale to Savage. The fit of the barrels in the GB photos would indicate to me the gun was made with them and the engraving appears very factory Fox to me. But, I've only owned Fox guns for 45 years so what do I know?

Gun didn't sale, according to the link. There was a buy now for about $7,800. The reserve wasn't met.

I see that in the link, but the photos Greg provided was taken in a different setting, probably with a different camera and without the benefit of the same lighting used for the photos in the link.

Greg,

Why don't you give Dennis Potter a call (414-425-4830). Dennis is the guy that restocked the Fox and he might be able to answer some of your questions. I believe he said that the forend to the gun was original and just the butt stock was changed but I could be wrong.

In any event it is a very nice gun at a very good price. In spite of all the nay sayers there aren't many gun safes with a Fox DE in them. wink

Thanks, Doug. Our semi-local faker wouldn't normally put Savage barrels on an upgraded fake, in my experience. The gun looks good to me, but the owner doesn't seem to be too concerned, nor would I. I think I would buy that gun.

Hello Greg, It looks like 100% period correct engraving to me. The semi-local's engravers got close, but didn't touch this one. Most likely a transition gun that was probably in progress upstairs in WHG's area when the move north came. Some of these 4wt barreled high grades were built with grouse cover friendly weights. I would ask the weight, and if it along with the wood's figure and dimensions trip your switch, make a reasonable, non offensive offer, as it appears to be a nice respectable refinished gun. Just make sure the SST is functioning correctly, both with snap caps and under recoil with non pansy trap loads, after its restocking. A letter might help with the timing of the Savage markings and proof and its build and/or ship date. Good Luck and Always Remember Life is Good, Treat it With Respect!

I've never seen "4" stamped so deeply....I wonder what the chamber wall thickness is under those numbers?

Hello all and thanks for all the great responses. It does seem as if this gun was started in Philly and finished by Savage. Dave (Researcher)has suggested this and makes sense. He said that it may have been part of a batch that was not finished until orders came in for them after the Savage buy out.

I did buy the gun. I got it for less than the asking price. The seller was great to deal with and was very helpful and answered all my questions. Always wanted a higher grade Fox so I guess this fits the bill!

Doug, I did e-mail Dennis, didn't want to bug him on the phone, I'll just let him answer me when he has time. Thanks for the number!

I also shot the gun today and I'm happy to say that she functions just fine. The ejectors are well timed and quite strong. The ST also worked without flaw. I also shot her to check POI (was not to concerned about patterning at this point). The POI is spot on, the R. bbls shot 60/40 and centered (perfect!) the L. bbls shot more like 50/50 and about 2" to the left. I checked the POI at 30yds. I was using 1oz New Era low pressure loads. I'll only shoot low pressure loads in her anyway. In fact I tend to shoot 2 1/2" loads in all my guns, 12's and 16's.

While this may not be a collectors piece, she is a good shooter. I happy with her.

Again, thanks for all the great advise and comments!

All the best!

Greg
