The low wall engraving thread got me wondering about assessing quality of engraving in different eras.

How would you assess the following examples of engraving?

Terry Wallace used to say he hated to see any engraving blown-up larger than life-size. If anyone else has the Winston Churchill SAA engraving book it is easy to see what Terry was talking about.
Personally, I hate to see my checkering any larger than life-size (G).

I absolutely agree, Steve.

Closeups can be instructional........if only to see how the effect as designed to be viewed was achieved.

Heh Heh.....

Alvin Linden might not be enthralled with my closeup of that little patch of checkering in the middle photo above.

Some of the best I've seen, the engraving that is (grin).

Certainly not as finely and minutely finished as the modern Bulino experts, but I'll bet it was done by a known name.

BTW I've heard that Ol' Scratch's inletting wasn't so smooth either when viewed up-close-&-personal, when compared to some of today's smiths' work.

For a good discussion of some of the various engraving treatments, James Meek's book is good. It shows some good closeups that will really make you wonder how such a rough-looking surface can appear so smooth at a little distance.
Regards, Joe
