Gentlemen, interested in hearing about your cleaning procedures for fine doubles. How often? What tools? What chemicals? What techniques? Mostly interested in bore cleaning, but bring all comments.

For my 12 and 20g guns I use a bronze brush screwed into the end of one of those fuzzy bore rods. I spray some Rem lube oil down the bore and run the rod thru half a dozen times. I wipe the outside of the gun with the same lube. I lube the hinges with some Mobil 1 automotive chassis lube (cause I have it in large quantity) that I keep in a small syringe.

I never use a lead bore removing solution. My feeling is that it will definitely get on the muzzle area around the rib and wick up the solder line a ways. This type of chemical is designed to desolve lead. Lead is one of the primary metals in the solder that holds the rib on and the barrels together. Enough years of this, and I believe these type of chemicals will cause the rib solder joint to fail.

If I'm not mistaken the old timers (excluding me of course) used to fill the barrel with mercury to remove lead.

I do the bores with a series of patches over a wool swab, with whatever oil I have at the time. I don't use a bore brush or steel wool unless I see some wad buildup. Preferences are CLP or Ballistol, but RemOil smells best. Lightly wipe the breech, watertable, breech face and outside with same oil. Dab of white lithium or Mobil 1 on hinge pins and pressure points. Slightly damp rag on the wood to take off sweat, mud, blood, DEET, dry thoroughly, then a bit of wax or Ballistol on the wood if necessary. Mine are all hunting guns, so the outsides are sometimes dirtier than the insides.
