Grateful for views on short fuse possible purchase of a sxs that, according to my experienced, but not in older American doubles, friend has the following elements:
--"Baker Hammerless" on both sideplates
--12 gauge sxs Damascus barrels (likely not twist)
--engraved action with 2 hunters and rising bird one side; one hunter and dog on the other;
--birds on the trigger guard
--screws generally OK
--Possible previous owners name on a plate inserted in the action (will try for a photo of this)
--buttplate that looks plastic with "BTC & Co." on it. The plate has a broken toe with the broken plastic piece there. No damage to the wood.
--barrels are 30" and "look" full and full
--flats (not sure if action or barrel) have 23 August 1992 and 13 October 1991 and a faint "Pat. 55B1091.

Will post pix as soon as I get them, but am off to the south of Sudan at noon tomorrow and need to get a deposit in if the assembled wisdom of the board argues that the gun sounds as promising as it seems to be...

Regards, Tim

It sounds like you are looking at a fairly early etched Baker A-Grade if Damascus or B-Grade if Twist. October 13, 1891, and August 23, 1892, are for Frank A. Hollenbeck Patents No. 461182 and 481327, both assigned to the Baker Gun & Forging Co. of Batavia, New York. The logo on the butt plate sould be BG&FCo. Hollenbeck had a third patent issued while he was in Batavia, Patent No. 446166, granted Feb. 10, 1891. That could be the faint "Pat. 55B1091" you see.

Researcher and Mike,

Thank you for the quick replies.

The S/N my friend recorded is 1104B.

According to the friend who had his hands on the gun, there are no grade markings on the action flats.

Although I do not know what the gun weighs, barrel wall thickness or, even, chokes, believe it's worth risking the $500 being asked. I would much prefer Damascus rather than twist and should have pix of the barrels shortly.

Regards,
Tim

Tim,
Check that "B" I have a hunch its an "F". From what I know of Bakers, the serial number is a indicator of grade. I believe your serial number would put it in the Peerless grade and the F if it is an F would indicate it was manufactured after Fulton purchased Baker.

Serial 1104 B is , as marked, a B Grade. It is still in the range of quality that $500 would be a good buy , if the gun is not screwed up.
