Rockdoc - I was one of those stubborn Americans (Metric? NO WAY!) back in the seventies. However, my father, who started as a carpenter in his early youth and ended up engineering all kinds of heavy construction (dams, bridges, roadways etc) worked abroad many times before and after the war (WW2), countries where the metric system was the standard. He told me how wrong I was and extolled the virtues of the metric system in construction and engineering. He really thought that pragmatically, it would be a leap forward for this country. He was disappointed it never caught on, something I didn't have the scope to appreciate at the time.

Airbus builds it's aircraft with English fasteners and tooling. Not metric.

Best, Ted Very interesting, Ted. When I was last in England everything seemed to be metric, it's been metric in Ireland for many, many years. I know that British screw sizes are still available but assumed that they are just replacements for crappy old MGs or Morris Minors. Gee, is there anything worse than an English car? Incoming, Incoming. Take cover. Nial

As I recall when the push for Metric conversion in the US was so big, CNC machining was still primarily a thing of the future. Some folks finely wised up & realized virtually every machine tool in the nation, lathes, mills, screw cutting machines etc, etc were all equipped with English lead screwa. Cost of a sudden change-over would have been Un-Real. Most CNC equipment will now cut either Metric or English with equal ease so it likely will re-surface in the future. It was very easy to look at the virtues if one just ignored all the practical aspects of the switch.

We do not use metric system anywhere. First of all gauge system for long firearms. Steel water pipes dimentions are in inches still, 1/2", 3/4", 1" etc. Vehicle wheels are in inches as well, 13, 14, 15, 16 etc. And I guess a lot of different stuff I can't recall right now. Actually everybody has to use those systems he's been learned and used to use, otherwise it would be disaster
