Hi all.

Question:

How difficult is it to change the hinge pin yourself on a 21?

Can it be rotated?

I am a Toolmaker by trade.

My gun seems just a tad loose when the forearm is off. I can get slight movement with a twisting motion on the action.

I assume the pin is a close fit to the bore, and you would have to machine a new pin, and ream the bore to fit?

I can adjust the latch, but when it is adjusted to take out the play, the lever is a bit to the left.

I belive this gun is a 1940 or so gun. It has the old style water table marks with the patent numbers, and the barrles are marked as the early years are.
12guage, 28" choked Mod and Full
Serial number is 16393.
Gun is original. stock marked with serial number under tang.

Thanks in advance

they are not that hard to do, but check the locking bolt first. Usually building up or replacing the bolt does the trick, not always. With the lever being left of center, the bolt would be my guess.

I agree with Steve. The hinge pin is too much work. Ignore the problem or build up the bolt. I have seen little used 21s with bad lever position. It's no big deal unless you are selling it.

The hinge pin was supplied .360,.365,.370;.375.Info supplied 15 years ago by a former Winchester employee who was working at Frank Lefever at the time. Name, Steve something. Different pins were used to fit multiple barrels. The locking bolt is the likely cause and I have replaced many of them. Not so bad with original ones, but the Galazan ones usually need the diameter reduced.Several years ago,I spoke with a person at the Winchester repair shop (new one)and mentioned the pin diameters and his comment --So that is why we have 4 boxes of them? Checked diameters and see above--4 boxes.

Bblnut:
If your gun is "just a tad loose", especially with the forearm off, why mess with it now? Shoot it and enjoy it until it's a bit more than a "tad" loose with the forearm on. Then consider your options. In my view, you're still in the "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" zone of things.

The hinge pin ( actually a bushing ) can be rotated 180 degrees. That will tighten it up.
As said, a "tad loose" with the forearm off is no big deal, nor is the lever being a bit to the left.

Don't over worry about it.
