I recently looked at Parker VH, my goal is to pick up a shooter. The gun was in reasonable shape considering it was made in '24-25, the exterior showed lots of use, a little rust pitting on the barrels and the stock would likely need refinishing but no cracks or repairs. It locked up tight and wasn't buggered up to my eye. Though the price was most reasonable what squelched the deal was the left bbl. was scored from just past the chamber to 3-4" from the muzzle. I've now got some regrets for not jumping on the deal. Your thoughts?

Steve

My sympathies to you. I, too, have regretted not buying a few guns. You should not have been put off by the scores if not grossly deep. They can be honed out most likely if wall thickness allows. Even shooting the gun with scored tubes (often the result of steel or "reclaimed" shot) is not a problem. The issue is mostly cosmetic. Maybe you'll see the gun again...

Best, Kensal

I have seen old guns that looked scored, and the "scoring" turned out to be plastic wad residue.

Ditto for me. Sometimes some very permanent looking marks are just lead or plastic and will come out with a little cleaning work. Too bad you passed it up.

Thanks guys, I suspected I'd screwed up or I wouldn't have asked. Pretty confident it was scored and looked like hxxx. Maybe next time or, better yet, it pops back up. It would have fit my shooting requirements quite nicely.

The dark days of the depression, here in the US, and post WWII, in Europe, often found guns being used with things that resembled shot, but, weren't-scrap lead, broken glass, junk clock parts, whatever could be found at hand. The scoring might have been exactly that. I would have measured the wall, and made a decision based on what was there.

Best,
Ted

Ted,
You might just have hit on the reason. The scoring was one line, at about 10 o'clock and looked to the naked eye to be relatively deep. I pondered on how, the scoring didn't look wide enough to have been the possible single steel pellet that got outside of a wad. Had there been any reason at all, one would have thought it was machined into the barrel. As I wasn't gun shopping I had no tools to check it out properly, but I'm confident that neither the stock nor the bbls. had been cut. Overall a nice shooter, but alas.........

I've seen scored bores from the reclaimed shot at our range. Some of the local shooters have complained of rocks found in the reclaimed shot.
