How were the original ones made? Casting? Forged?

I bought a steel shotgun style plate at a gun show this last weekend, purported to be a Winchester one. It was a lot cheaper than the Treebone one that I got last year that I promptly filed smooth.

Anyways.... This one has a filligree of cast marks on the inside,has been refinished at least once, and is still nicer than what I had, so I grabbed it. Just wondering if I have an original or a repro.

Shoulda thought to grab some screws... Next time...if I remember.

Kinda hard to tell w/o a pic... most Winchester steel BPs mfg prior to 64 were forged

I am remiss and somewhat late in getting back to this.

Thank you for the information. I took a closer look at the filigree of marks inside this plate, and they appear to be scale marks, from having been forged, or at least, that is my read on them.

In any case, I am pleased to have it, and I think it'll work for what I wanted. It has been refinished at least once, and has had some areas of the points flattened on top. Not sure if I am going to do anything about that or not.

Eventually, I would like this to be color case hardened. Still in the long slow plotting stages with that, though.
