Hi there I recently purchased an older FAMARS side by side. I know it isn't a high end one, thus probably something from the early seventies when they were making everything. I bought it really for the name only. Does anyone have any info on the older knock-a-bouts that they used to make. I don't think this one is a super low end, but probably something mid range. I saw and tested a SXS Famars from the 70s. It is the only SXS I ever saw with entablature lump, where the flats and lumps are one piece and the barrel tubes are soldered onto this piece.
It had a rounded bar and conacve lock plates, engraved with rose and scroll by hand. This particular SXS has been sold around and is now in the hands of an acquaintance. It showed no problems but it is not up to the current Famars standard of quality and embellishment.

Interesting. I am going to email FAMARS the serial number once I get the gun in my hands.

This is a RBL from Connecticutt Shotgun Mfg.

Yes Chuck H. That is an entablature, literally tabletop, lump.
The Famars in the above pics looks like a typical example of a Gardone boxlock from the 70s and 80s. If my guess is right, it has a bolted stock and a more or less simple copy of an Anson Deeley action.
From this example and other early Famars shotguns I have seen it looks like in the beginning Famars was aiming at the mass market. The shift to the custom high end production came later. In the late 70s Gun Digest articles show the first impressive work of the firm. One such show of force being the set of five matched guns. Matched in the sense that parts from one would fit all five, which is no mean feat of metalsmithing. The choice seems to have turned out well for Famars.

So in terms of value? Typical to guns of that era, anywhere around the $500 to $1500 range?

Does the bottom of the action remind anyone else of RBL?

Vaguely, though the hook is not exposed on the RBLs. Do I see monoblock weld seams on the FAMARS gun?
