I was shooting at the Westervelt Log a Load Children's Hospital shoot this past Friday. I was fumbling around trying to get shells from one side and save hulls on the other as I opened the gun. My left little finger was below the action and as it opened it sheared off a tripple ought buck sized piece of the pad on the finger tip. Hurt like hell and I was dripping blood all over the place. Someone happened to have a bandaid in their wallet so after a hankerchief compression I was able to wrap it tight enough to stop the bleeding. It was a 686 Sporting Clays model. Ended up with my best score there ever but will certainly be more careful in the future.

That is weird. A close friend of mine just got himself a new 687 for quail, and remarked that his "bit" him as well. I have opened mine over 10,000 times without that happening. Guess it is just how you happen to be holding it. I"ll bet you won't do it again, Tyler.
OTOH, I remember my Grandaddy telling me about a fellow around here who worked in a cotton gin. Said he put his hand in the wrong place and lost a finger. After it healed, a while later, he was showing someone how it happenend and put his hand back in the same place. You guessed it, lost another finger! Don't let THAT happen!

Oh it does hurt - While using my Berettas for coaching I have on a couple of occasions (didn't learn the first time!!) pinched the bit of the palm next to the little finger - didn’t know I knew so many expletives!! On another occasion a client left his thumb resting on the top leaver - unfortunately for him the chequering had produced a razor sharp serrated edge. It was on this occasion I was able to see the damage human blood can have on the blacking of the barrel!!

You guys just have no class! I had a similar incident with a friend's Woodward OU. At least when something takes a bite out of me, it's a high class gun. I think the moral of the story is, we ought to be shooting sxs.

You guys should change the zippers on your trousers to buttons, just in case...

They'll do that. The actual moral of the story is to have your hand on the forend wood whilst opening.
I've learned that ejectors can be plenty sharp too, especially on the Superposed. I like to catch shells for reloading, and if you cover the ejectors with the palm of your hand and let them pop, they can make you bleed.
Rule # 3, never put your thumb inside the ejection port. Nothing is quite so guaranteed to cause uncomfort as an extractor through the thumb. It even interferes with holding your favorite beverage after the shoot.

The cocking leaver of a semi auto taking off your thumb nail while assisting a novice certainly makes your eyes water!!!

Yeah, I'm familiar with M1 thumb having shot one for several years in high power competition. The worst though was my buddie that was viewing a M1 for purchase. He stuck his little finger in the chamber area to view the bore from the muzzle and....you guessed it...slammed shut. I shut my thumb in the door of a 55 Chebby once and nearly fainted!!!!!!
