The old Purdey case that houses my (Purdey) muzzleloading double 16 bore from circa 1860 has developed a problem in one of its compartments. The top 1/2 inch edge of the felt at the butt end of the stock has come loose. I was going to glue it before thinking of its age and wondering if that had any impact on how I would go about affixing it.

Anyone have experience repairing such things after 150 years?

Hi KK,

A friend who restores them for me uses a "copydex" kind of glue I think but I'll check with him. You want something that isn't too liquid otheriwse it "sops" through the material.

Sorry to be pedantic but please don't use white glue/copydex/pva. It is great stuff for mending modern things that you will never want to disassemble again but not very sympathetic to lovely old antique cases. If you get it where it shouldn't be and don't get it off in time it is permanent!

Use a old fashioned animal glue, sometime called pearl glue. It is water based and activated by heating to a little less that boiling temp in a double pan or similar. A lot of fuss perhaps but it is infinitely mend-able, can be soaked or steamed loose and is the stuff that your case was put together with originally.

As Balistix999 says, keep the glue thick or it may soak through the fabric. However, being water based a little careful sponging off with a warm damp sponge will remove any spillage.

I'm glad Toby stepped in! smile

I better check what my chap uses for cases then. I'll be getting some of the pearl glue myself for my future work. I think Peter Dyson sells it.
