Any experience with a 12G AYA XXV? I like the XXV concept and the gun that I have handled is very nice. It appears to be similar to the AYA 4/53 with shorter barrels (25”) and Churchill tapered rib. I am looking at one that appears to be at a reasonable price ($1500), just curious if anyone had an experience with this gun. I am going to use it as a game gun, mostly for walk up shooting in cover but also on the occasional “driven bird” hunt as practiced in the US. This would replace a BSS with 26” barrels and similar chokes (IC/Mod). Thanks Z

Go for it. I had one in 20 bore but I couldn't hit with it. Too muzzle light. I've handled several 12 bores, latest at the Vintage Cup, and they didn't have that problem, in fact they seemed heavy. I wasn't interested because I like very light guns but they have to have the weight well forward before I can hit with them. Still, those short barrels are handy in heavy brush and thorn trees. nial

I ordered a set of three in the early '80s (suckered on the short barrel business) while visiting the factory at Eibar. The 12 was the keeper, I liked it alot. Sold the set, as the 20 and 28 were unruly, even after having them balanced at a good shop in London. All were sidelocks. I'd make sure I got double triggers, as their single triggers are notoriously unreliable.
Wish I'd kept the 12...

I have one in 12Ga. Mine is anything but heavy at 5lbs 14oz. Though it is extremely light it is very well balanced and does not feel whippy. It is my primary upland gun now days. If you shoot shorter barreled guns well I would highly recommend one. At that price it is a good deal if it is in good condition. Here it is from two weekends ago during our opener for pheasant.

Both the boxlock and sidelock are good reliable guns ,although I would avoid the single trigger. I have no worries in recommending AyA's . Only 2 things to watch for if its a used or older gun is that the bites are sound and that it not loose in the action and that the strikers are Ok if a sidelock, not a big problems to put right if you know a competant gunsmith. Depends on your build but the sidelock seems a heavier gun .
