A question for Henri Pieper owners.

The barrel flats of my Pieper (Bayard) hammer gun has a number of stamps; the usual proof marks including two 4-digit numbers - 9731 and 5491. It also has what looks like the Roman numeral XII.

The 9731 looks like a proof mark date. What does the 5491 (pressure?) and XII stamps refer to?

Thanks for any information.

Vincent,

The marks you are describing are not Belgian proof marks. You are confusing Italian, German and Belgian proof markings. You can find the Belgian proof marks here:

It would help if you posted pictures of the gun and showed the proof marks. I am somewhat familiar with Pieper guns and may be able to identify the model number.

The gun was proofed in 1929. It is a 20ga with 65mm chambers. It was proofed for smokeless powder. At the time of proof the barrels weighed 1.397 kilos or 3.078 pounds.
