Maybe not a true classic, but certainly vintage, and any with Harry Pope's barrels- wow. I have two .22 LR Stevens single shots (thanks GrandDad and Dad) a Walnut Hill 44 and a 414 Armory model- both make the fox squirrels (aka- tree rats) tremble once the leaves are off the hardwoods in Oct- But I just picked up a nice 14 1/2 .22LR Little Scout 20" rd. barrel Pat'd July 2-07. What is strange to me, on the rear upper part of the left side of the receiver- in a circle are the stamped initials SVG- anyone know what those initals stand for- sorry, no serial number to date year of mfg- believe they were made from about 1913 to 1941--

It stands for Savage who bought Stevens out. They continued to operate the Chicopee plant for a number of years but marked the guns with SVG that were made under their ownership.

I haven't seen the SVG marking on anything but the Little Scouts personally although they may have marked others.

Years ago, I won a bet with a buddy who claimed that a .22 rimfire had zero recoil. I let him shoot my Little Scout with its' steel buttplate about 1/8" from his chin. After the shot, he grabbed his chin and said, "Oh f***, I broke my f***ing chin." I said, "Pay me." Newtons laws can be cruel.

If you like Stevens single shots, you might want to take a look at the one on the Gun Vault at Fox Hill's web site. http://gun-vault.com/american_doubles.htmThe rifle is the first on the list of American Doubles and it sure seems to be a nice one indeed. Not mine, just stumbled across it and thought it was worth sharing.
