Hi folks, leaving finished barrels in cold water mixed with a bit of bicarbonate of soda (or baking soda) overnight. Is this a/or the best way of arresting further rusting?

I've heard that heating the barrels a bit and spraying on WD 40 will do the job.

Thanks...only thing is I don't want to get any sort of oil on it so I can lacquer it tomorrow...but maybe I should give that idea up

doesn't boiling them stop rust?

Yes, but it also turns them black...which I don't want...

I've just dumped them in baking soda cold water for 2hrs...hopefully that'll stop things until tomorrow when I'll either wax them or lacquer them!

watch closely, I've had the baking soda settle and discolor the barrels in spots. I've pretty much given up on coatings for damascus. I usually just heat up the barrels and apply vaseline. Once cool I wipe off the excess and I've not had any problems with after rusting.

I was told by someone whom I trust to rub on Watco Danish Oil, wait a couple hours and wipe it off with a paper towel. So far that has worked great for my meager collection.

Hi Toby has told me what to do! Caustic Soda at the right temp for an hour...neutralises the acid. Good stuff...now going to decide how to finish them...traditional wax or lacquer...

I believe Dr.Caddy, after the last rusting, boiling, etching, heated finished barrels and applied either motor oil and/or boiled linseed oil and let them sit overnight. The oil wiped off the next day gives a nice appearance and the boiled linseed oil hardens and doesn't look bad either.
These are Stub Twist from an 1899 L.C. smith hammer gun. I was going to use it as a parts gun because it had 13 small dents in the one barrel. After taking dents out, I refinished barrels and decided to keep gun as a shooter.

These barrels have boiled linseed oil and barrels were heated when applied.

Hi David, they look really nice. However with that heating and oiling process make them turn black? I want to keep these brown.
