The thread about the Ideal shotgun reminded my of a good story.
About 10 years ago I came across a nice A. Jos. DeFourny, 20ga in a local Gunshop,(it was marked "2" on the rib) after a couple of months of haggling over the price I bought it and a little Belgian 28ga Hammergun, the right barrel of the 28 was crushed (that is another story). The DeFourny had a broken ejecter spring and the stub had pushed out the wood on the forend. I replaced the spring, steamed the wood back, recut the checkering and refinished the wood. I had done all I could do for it, time to sell and move on to the next project.
I placed the gun on consignment at a Bethesda, MD, gunshop.
A couple of weeks later the shop owner called and told me the gun had sold and that I would not believe the rest of the story.
As luck would have it the Buyer was up in Bethesda on business and had stoped in the shop during a break to look over the used shotguns (avid woodcock hunter). The light went on "I think I have the "1" gun at home". he did indeed have it.
Just like winning the Lottery.

Seem to remember the shop you are referring to. I think it was called Gentleman Hunter. It was about a block or two off of Wisconsin Avenue and not too far from the Tasty Diner. Pretty nice stuff, but the citizens got all up tight about having an establishment such as this in the nice and quiet town of Bethesda. i think it closed up a few years ago.

It's really discouraging to me to hear about something like this happening. Unfortunately it's usually a small but vocal minority that will create a rukus about a situation like this. The majority of the citizenry are usually apathetic.

Getting the shop open as a problem because the local soccer moms were concerned that people would rob gas stations and such with the Parkers and Purdeys that Art was selling, I believe he agreed to not sell ammunition or hand guns to make the locals settle down.
I think the store closed due to a lease coming due for renewal and a possible loss of interest on the part of the owner. It was a great shop and I really miss it.
