Shoot - this is going to be a tough question, without the benefit of a photo.....which I can't seem to attach.
I have a Hawkin's pad I'd like to install, but it is HUGE. The diamond pattern cutouts on the side extend beyond the profile of the stock's butt. Will this "correct" itself when I grind down the pad? Or, is it just too large (the only size I could find, in that style)? THANKS!

The only way to accurately see if it will fit correctly is to screw it to the stock firmly and try to get the top just above the heel. Take a sharp scriber and outline the pad to the stock. Remove and look to see if it is going to leave those diamond patterns. You will need a lot for the toe because of the angle, especially if it is a 1" pad. If the holes are not centered in the scribe marks then it will not look right, even with the plugs in them. You might have to fill and re-drill the holes.

The smallest size pad you can use is always best, as long as you can follow the line at the toe. Your description sounds like the pad you have is way too large. You would certainly want some solid rubber left, beyond the X's or diamonds, at the heel and toe. I think the "Old English" style, from Pachmayr is as classy a look as you can get. The Decelerator pads are my favorites, for looks and durability. They come in a good variety of sizes and also in red, for the old fashioned look.

Sounds like you have a Maxi-pad.
