I just purchased the Miroku boxlock below. Its a 20ga with a straight grip and splinter forend. The butt is smooth wood. I am probably going to add a pad once I get it but which would be best? A Silvers, leather-covered pad, decelerator, something else? What thickness? Which color?

If you have photos of your boxlocks with these pads, please post photos.

Thanks!

Well, I wouldn't pad a 20 ga. unless I needed to extend the LOP. If I did, it would probably be a Silvers pad. I guess.

Connecticut Shotgun sells some pretty nice pads, as do others.

I'm probably sounding a bit like a broken record on this subject, but I think the pads from NECG are extremely nice. I have a friend who had the NECG pads put on one of his shotguns, they look fantastic. The Stock Dr. (aka Dennis E. Smith) installed the pads and as always did a bang up job. I would put the "orange" NECG pad on your Miroku (nice gun by the way). Silvers are expensive (the last one I bought was over $75), they are fitting for a higher grade gun, I think the NECG or the Pachmayr "old english" would be the pad of choice for this gun. The Silvers reproduction pads do the original article very little justice in my opinion..none of them seem to really look "right".

My single, installed Pachmayr "Olde English" pad looks nice, but, is kind of sticky. I like how it looks, but, it sucks using it.
I like a plain plate or checkered butt the best, and I wouldn't pad a 20 either, unless it was short.

Best,
Ted

I've used the Old English pad for decades. The newer ones seem less slick than in the past, but they seem softer too.

If recoil is not an issue, such as my 20ga's, I use a 0.6" Pachmayr Old English.

I wouldn't own a shotgun without a rubber pad, not even a .410. When I plant the butt in the shoulder pocket I require it to stay there. IMO, good practice for learning a proper gun mount is to make the pad as sticky as possible, put on a baggy shirt and mount the gun until the stickiness/clothing is no longer an issue.

It should be a felony to install a pad on a gun like that, unless it already has a pad (which this one does not), or you need to add LOP. Otherwise, just leave it alone, or have the butt checkered.

I agree with Mike, put a Decelerator on. That's what I have on my field guns. I just bought a new SxS that has a checkered butt. It looks great now but IMO given time it won't due to I use my guns, and don't baby them. A good quality pad done well looks nice and protects the wood from chips and breaks.

Thanks for the replies fellas. The LOP is okay where it is. I personally prefer pads over checkered butts simply because they feel better when I mount and shoot. I like the thickness of that that pad, Mike. Can that be had in orange?
