Hello Guys

Well if you don't want to see a bubba'd rifle look away now. However I suppose I can only improve this from here - tell me how you think you'd proceed.

From this pair I'd like to finish with a "Hunting rifle" with modern stock and scope, and a classic (just add bolt really).

I've included the last photo of a standard 98 bolt with the kurz bolt as I'd never been able to compare them together side by side before - quite interesting

Cheers - Foster

If you're keeping the lower one as a classic, replace the rear sight with one of the three-leaf rears (available from SARCO for @$45)

Can we see some better resolution shots of the first pic?

Hello - here is a higher res shot, unfortunately I'm not a photographer so its still a poor soft shot.

I am slowly formulating a plan. Recently I was able to bore-scope both rifles, the short one is not good at all. I am going to start with this short rifle, the basic steps will be to restore the bolt to original, have a saddle fitted to the front of the receiver to cover the dovetail, rings fitted and rebarrel to the exact barrel profile of the long rifle, which still lives in its original stock. Finally restock, using the long rifle stock as a pattern.

Sadly a supposedly "top gunsmith" I was recently referred to (allegedly trained in a top "London" establishment) tried to tell me that the "B, U and G" proofs on these rifles were british, which doesn't do much for ones sense of confidence in his knowledge !!

Thanks for the tip on SARCO for sights, I was wondering how to proceed with the cut-off ears.

Cheers - Foster

Is one of the bolts cut for the Lyman No1? If so that would be a good sight for the Mauser. BUG" is English, time for a new gunsmith ;-).
