I propose we make the first day of “bird season” the start of the New Year. For me, it has been for 40 years although I had never given it that name. The opening day tradition was passed on to me by my hunting buddy and sports writer J.B. Stearns who always celebrated the end of the first hunt with the best wine and food of the year. I am sure J.B. would have seconded my new calendar. Before you dissent, please consider that January first isn’t the shortest or longest day of the year anywhere on earth nor is it when the earth is closest or furthest from the sun that particular day.

My first day of bird hunting is the single day I wait all year to reach, so I think it is a fine idea. Doves and geese begin September 1 and my canvas chair, shell bag and cigars wait with me. A toast to the goldenrod, ironweed and the birds of early fall! Kurt
