I kind of agree with Gary There is no substitute for the real thing. Something gets lost along the way. My brother has one of the early Rugers It looks prety good. I think it looks better than the Remington. Ruger put extra effort in some of their early stuff and it showed.

Those are some really beautiful pictures of Mannlicher style rifles and "tut", I hope that the stock you make turns out really well. I hope that you will share with us the progress you make on it.

Changing the subject slightly, I am curious about this rifle

What do people think of a Mannlicher style rifle in 220 Swift?
Good idea, bad idea, etc?

I apologize if anyone thinks it is an inappropriate subject deviation.

I think guns with barrel's longer then about 20" look funny as a mannlicher. No problem with the 220 Swift in a Mannlicher.

PhysDoc, the forend on that Jaeger is shaped perfectly. But IMO a 22" fullstock Swift is not a varmint rifle, the best use for a high speed .22. That said, the Swift did, and perhaps still does, have some popularity in some parts of the country as a deer rifle, for which this Jaeger would be well suited.

A friend has been reading this thread and ask me to post the following.

"It's a small ring Mexican stocked in English walnut by Don Klein with metalwork by Don Klein and Herman Waldron. The engraving is by Dan Goodwin and is chambered for 7X57 Mauser with an 18 1/2" barrel. I had it built in the about 1984."

Nice! I especially like the shorter barrel and slimmer forestock.

One reason that the Mannlicher-Schoenauer carbines look so good is that they don't need a lot of wood ahead of the rear of the magazine since the rear face is the recoil surface; this means that the M-S forestock area can be made thinner and more tapered than most other bolt rifles without sacrificing necessary strength and so results in a dainty and petite rifle.

IMO a Swift needs a longer 24"-26" barrel (velocity) and a mannlicher-style stock needs a shorter 16.5"-20" barrel (aesthetics). JMO.
Regards, Joe

Permit me to interject: whatever their utility, or indeed their necessity for some older shooters, a scope sight will spoil the lines of a handsome rifle.

I believe there is a difference in moisture and cured wood. I don't believe the moisture content is the only key to when a blank is ready to be carved on.
