I was looking at this gun for sale yesterday, not up on British guns. it was in an old beat up leather case but the gun itself was well used but tight and in basically good shape. what seemed unusual to me was the number 3689 was on the water table and forearm iron but 5797 was on the underside of both barrels and on the trigger guard. also it had blued steel barrels, not Damascus. seller claims pre 1900. anyone know of a good source of info on these guns?

There is a ton of books written about the English shotgun out there and most of them are very informative. Westley Richards is still with us and producing guns which most of the world considers masterpieces so contact them if you can!!!
But be careful some Belgium outfits liked to counterfeit the English names.

W.R. can provide you a complete info on your gun. It is not totaly for free, but I think the money is good spend if you want to know for who the gun is initialy made.

thanks, it is a Westley Richards & Company, clearly marked on the sides. what I'm not sure of is the barrels. there are no "sleeved" markings anywhere on the barrels but I would think the serial numbers would all match if it were correct. wish I had had my camera with me yesterday and the gun is in another town.

the Westley Richards website says 5797 is 1882 and 3689 would be 1867.
