I have used Galazan orange pads for quite a while. The black spacer plate was soft on them for a while & they corrected it. I just sent out a rifle with one that left the shop fine, but when it arrived in FL it had curled away from the toe - almost like it got hot and moved under the screw pressure. Anybody else have issues like this?
I have tried the Silvers pads, and while period correct I find them to be only slightly better than a steel buttplate in the recoil absorbtion department.
I am thinking about using the Griffin & Howe, but they look (in the pencil drawing on G&H website) very similar to the Galazan pad & I dont want more of the same for $5 more per pad. What about the Decelerator in Red or Brown?

I started using the Griffin and Howe repro Silvers pads in 1986 and have never had a bad one. They are not the same as other Silvers repros. However, they are big with big plugs. They won't work on a .410 Parker. The G&H pad comes with a steel washer in the hole. If you use the right large flat bottom screws, the pad should not rise. If the washers are not as big as the plugs, you should substitute washers that are as big as the plugs.

I've used a bunch of Decelerators, and like them. They just flat work. The soft rubber really absorbs recoil, but they won't deform while sitting in the safe like some of the other "wonder" pads. You do have to use a little extra care when grinding not to get them too hot. Sorry I don't have a better picture, but here's the red one on my .45-70 high wall. Greg

Nice! I haven't seen the red Decelerators before, where did you get yours? Regards, Joe

Joe, I ordered a red and a brown decelerator from Brownell's. They came in the other day & I really like them. I'm not crazy about the leather print on the back end, but it would grind off if I decide I can't live with it. One other cool thing about them is they come in differnet thicknesses (not all colors in all thicknesses, but it's still an option). That way if you are building a .270 and want a pad it doesn't have to look just like the 450 Rigby you made last month.
I am going to order a G&H in the next couple days - I'll report back.
gasgunner started a post a while back that, as I remember, got hijacked into oblivion. He was interested in what people are looking for and maybe getting others to help find them. Maybe we should get it going again?

Michael, the Silvers pads Galazan has are the ones in the link you posted, at least they come in a very similar package. I like them better than their "Period Correct Pad" from an installation standpoint, but they offer little in recoil reduction. Hard as a brick. About half of the Period correct pads I've installed have had a soft black spacer that regardless of washer size for the screws will lift away from the wood when tightened down. Each time I find one I call Galazan and they send me another for free - no complaints in the customer service, it's just unhandy.
will get the G&H on the way.
