I have a 500 and 200e 20gauge Ithica /SKB. the 500 is ic-mod and the 200e is mod full. The lenght of the choke tapers seems short to me as they are not much more than an inch long. My question is aside from the chrome bores has anyone had good patterns thru opened chokes that are this short? I have had very good luck with the open chokes of the 500 and hope to replicate it with the 200e. I know Briley tubes are just the thing in this case, but are there other options? Thanks in advance Mark

You can remove the chrome in the end of the choke area, and end up with a conical parallel section that will work just fine.

There are two possible problems with this.

1. It looks like hell.

2. The steel used in the Ithaca SKB barrels is not the hardest stuff in the world. By using their roto-forging technique, and thus obtaining a consistant wall thickness, legend has it that they could and did use a softer alloy. What you end up with may be subject to damage.

Mostly because of (1), I opted for a Briley job on mine. Expensive, but I'm well pleased.

Thanks that was what I was wondering. Start saving for tubes. Mark

I think it's the best way to go. Others may disagree.

The 200E is a good bit lighter in the barrel set than the non-Ithaca guns. They handle well, and are decent guns.

I've heard it's best to glass bed the stock but have not done so with mine. It sees few heavy loads.

Jones, you've got me confused there. Are you comparing the original Ithaca-imported SKB's to the later guns, after SKB brought them in on their own? In that case, I think anyone who's handled both would agree that the Ithaca imports are lighter. Of course the later ones all came with factory choke tubes.

Yes, and that's what I should have said. Thanks.

Mark, my experience with SKB 500 20 ga is that the IC/M is plenty open for grouse and ducks. I brought down 11 blacks and mallards--bang, bang---as they rose from a pothole a couple years ago, estimated 30 yards. Retrieved crippled with my retriever. One over the limit but my buddy was with me so the law was only bruised. I use the 500 on everything from woodcock to geese.
