Does anyone know of a source for the cardboard shipping boxes for a Winchester Model 21 and a Model 70? I have a friend who is looking for them. Thanks for any help.

You'll see original shipping boxes on venues like Ebay periodically. Be prepared for sticker shock as apparentely very few rifle/shotgun boxes have survived. I was watching one auction for a Winchester Model 72 box for an example I have that's in almost new condition. The Model 72 was a relatively inexpensive target rifle built in the 50s and 60s. The box went for $275 which is over three times what the rifle complete with box originally sold for.

The Model 72 is not and was never a target rifle, it is a tube fed sporting rifle.

You are thinking of the Model 75 which is a target rifle, but was also made as a high grade sporter.

I have some model 70 boxes but they are marked with the serial number of the rifle for the most part. What is he looking for?

No Don:
I'm not thinking of the Model 75 or the Model 52 either. While I agree Winchester never marketed the Model 72 as a target rifle plenty of them saw yeomans duty as entry level rifles for that purpose. It was a lot less expensive than either of the traditional Winchester target rifles and very accurate in it's own right. The person I got mine from said it was used for that purpose and it's clear looking at the condition it never spent much time banging around in the woods. However we stray from the point of this thread and that's the cost and availability today for "throwaway" original factory boxes.

How is you Model 72 set up that makes it a "target" rifle in the true since of the term and is this set up factory? Let's see a few pictures of this "target" rifle. How many is "plenty"?

As with any 'vintage' item, I would be suspicious until I knew how to confirm if vintage. The reproduction of vintage 'Sporting Paper' has caused me to stop collecting many years ago.-Dick

Some time ago I was into collecting and somewhat still am, Belgium Browning A5's. I searched the internet and had built contacts all over the country to find vintage A5 boxes. I found them in all kinds of condition. I accumilated several pristine boxes and have one empty one now. We ( my buds )copied labels and made them out to match our guns. I even had Browning Auto 22 and Superposed boxes. My buddies found someone who had a stash of original labels and they bought all of them. I still have some.
At that time I was also into Winchester 42's as well. What I did see is the 42 boxes were a lot higher and harder to find than the A5 boxes.
Oh, I paid anywhere from $50 to over $200 for the A5 boxes. I even found original manuals. It makes a heck of a display to have a as new A5 sitting in a nice box with a nice manual to match.
