Speaking of superior craftsmanship Glen, how's the Fraser project coming?

As with all things human, except intelligence, the gun world continually evolves. We routinely use equipment, processes and techniques that were unavailable just a few years ago. I love the older work for its own style and the fact that they opened the door for the rest of us to follow. I will even go one further and say that the finest work in the world today is primarily in the USA. Not that there are not some incredible craftspeople elsewhere. Its Flag Day and my beauty is flying high, wide and handsome. Gotta go outside and take another look.

Glenn,
I finally heard back from Wal Winfer. All of his photos of Frasers were mailed to Tom Rowe. Tomorrow I will call Tom and get Joe Salter to contact Jonathan Kirton. BTW this topic resulted from a conversation I had with Dave at the CADA show on Friday before you showed up on Saturday.

Notwithstanding the wonderful work that is coming from our top American smiths today, which is the best in the world, IMO the peak of rifle craftsmanship remains British doubles 1880-1939.

I have to believe the patina, of oxidized linseed oil and edge wore rust blueing - that can only be gained thru time, plays a significant part in our thoughts about when the peak of craftsmanship occurred. I believe it has yet to come.
There are certain charming effects that we have learned to appreciate and love that can only be produced by the tools avaiable at the period of the firearm, however this should not be confused as craftsmanship. The skills and craft of todays makers have only improved with time. This is most apparent in todays engravers and checkering. IMHO
