I was just looking at the application for a C&R. It looks like the cost is no more than what I just paid to have a gun received. Any negatives? Advice? I will move this to Misfires if anyone has a problem with it here.

I've had one for 12 years. No calls from the feds and it makes it very easy to buy guns older than 50 years. Brownell's and other similar outfits extend discounts to 03 license holders.

A C&R License is one of the few things the Government has done that actually makes sense. Go for it. Jim

30$. One transaction w/ 25$ receiver fee saved (and I believe 25 is about minimum one can expect) and nearly clear of the investment. Great for those of us who like guns semi-centenarian. Whatever you use for a "Bound Book" make your entries in a timely manner before you forget (maybe day of sale like the dealers do).

All the above. They called for an appointment right after 9/11, showed up on time just to discuss procedure, didn't ask to see anything, very polite.

Am I correct in understanding that you can only use a C&R to buy guns, not to re-sell them?

You may add or subtract from your collection as you please but don't, for example, buy 10 '98 Mausers, pick off two of the best examples and place the rest on a gun show table with hopes of covering your initial investment.

A C&R license is NOT valid for engaging in the firearms trade. The BATFE is very clear on this and the license is only for hobbiests to buy and sell in pursuit of their own collections. Having said that; When you sell a firearm that's been previously logged in as a purchase under your license you are obligated too log the sale into your records as a disposition including the name address etc. of the buyer. You of course are not required to do a background check on the buyer. I'm sure others will have additional points to add here. Jim
